Red Light Therapy for Eye Health, or Low Level Light Therapy for Ocular Disease has become increasingly prevalent in mainstream ophthalmic medicine. Red Light Therapy is different to the type of laser therapy often associated with eye health, which involves the use of surgical lasers to remove cataracts, for example. Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) triggers a different mechanism which improves metabolic health for regenerative and safe healing.
Recent studies show significant success for the improvement of various eye conditions, including Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Dry Eye Disease. By a process of Photobiomodulation (PBM), Low Level Laser Therapy is a safe and effective treatment for Degenerative Ocular Conditions including:
- Early and Intermediate Dry AMD.
- Dry Eye Disease.
- Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.
- Retinal Injury and Disease.
- Retinitis Pigmentosa.
What does Red Light for Eye Health do?
Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT), triggers a process called angiogenesis the formation of new blood capillaries, which leads to an increased flow of blood to the site of the tissue damage, which helps to accelerate healing. Low Level Laser Therapy also increases the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which is known to speed up the healing process within soft tissue.
Our approach to using Red Light Therapy to help resolve Degenerative Ocular Disease conditions.
We use the most advanced Therapeutic Laser equipment to deliver Red Light Therapy for Eye Health treatments. As experts in Low Level Laser Therapy since 2015 we use tried and tested protocols with specific light wavelengths in the 600-1,000nm range of visible and invisible light (infrared and near infrared) to trigger a biological process of photobiomodulation. We also incorporate PBM protocols from clinical studies, specially related to the healing of ocular conditions.
The therapy is a gentle, calming treatment, with no associated pain. The patient simply relaxes, with their eyes closed and lets the healing light gently penetrate the eyelids, much like sitting in the sun at sunrise or sunset.
We recommend a course of 4 treatments at weekly intervals, at which point we assess progress and ongoing sessions if required.
Who can receive Therapeutic Laser for Eye Health
You may benefit from Therapeutic Laser if you have been diagnosed with the following conditions:
Degenerative Ocular Disease
Age Related Dry Macular Degeneration causes symptoms such as distorted or blurry central vision, difficulty reading, and trouble recognising faces. Dry degeneration is the more common form of macular degeneration, affecting central vision by gradually thinning the macula.
Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eye syndrome symptoms include a burning or gritty sensation, eye redness, itchiness, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light. The condition is often caused by aging, certain medications. Other factors include wind and air conditioning, prolonged screen use and contact lenses.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common eye condition where the tiny oil-producing glands in the eyelids become blocked or malfunction, leading to a lack of oil in the tear film. Symptoms include burning, itching, redness, a foreign body sensation, watery eyes, blurry vision, and crusty eyelids. Causes range from aging and hormonal changes to lifestyle factors like extended screen time and specific medications.
Courses of Eye Health Therapies at Laser Medicine.
We have developed a number of safe protocols to help support the prevention and / or treatment of eye related conditions, based on the vast array of clinical evidence carried out in the field. The treatment is without sensation. The patient keeps their eyes closed so that light wavelengths gently penetrate through the eyelids. It feels like lying in the sun at sunrise or sunset.
Initial consultation and treatment: The first session provides the patient with the opportunity to discuss their individual case and experience the treatment in the comfort of our Harley Street clinic.
Regular sessions: We recommend a course of 3 further sessions at weekly intervals.
Assessment: After 4 sessions we assess progress and advise on ongoing sessions as required.
Treatments are available privately at our Harley Street clinic.
Our Fees
First session and consultation: £250
3 further sessions: £700.

Clinical Studies: Red Light Eye Health Therapy for Degenerative Ocular Disease.
Clinical studies proving the effectiveness of Photobiomodulation for eye health related conditions are available within over 30 published reports. The 30 studies report positive findings in clinical, anatomical and quality of life (QoL). Photobiomodulation Therapy is also shown to resolve degenerative and inflammatory mechanisms that underpin the development of a variety of ocular disease states.
- Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – LIGHTSITE III (Valeda PBM system)
- Effect of low-level light therapy in patients with dry eye: a prospective, randomized, observer-masked trial
- Low-level light therapy alone versus combination therapy with intense pulsed light in the treatment of dry eye disease with meibomian gland dysfunction: A randomised paired-eye and mechanism of action trial
