Many patients benefit from pain relief and soft tissue repair as two of the major benefits of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT). Low Level Laser Therapy for Costochondritis (Tietze’s) is becoming more known as an effective treatment, which traditional medication is often unable to address. Through our experience of working with patients with pain and inflammatory conditions, we have witnessed great success in treating conditions like costochondritis, because of the powerful effect that Photobiomodulation / Low Level Laser Therapy has on reducing inflammation within soft tissue.

How does Laser Therapy for Costochondritis work?

Therapeutic Laser works at a number of fundamental levels in order to address inflammation and pain within the body. We use Low Level Laser to balance the lymphatic system and encourage the distribution of white blood cells to the necessary areas of the body for healing. During this process a biological process takes place in the cell mitochondria, increasing the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to speed up the body’s healing mechanisms. Most importantly in the case of Costochondritis, Low Level Laser reduces inflammation. At the same time endorphins are released into the blood stream, to creates the additional benefit of a natural pain relief treatment, reducing the need for pharmaceutical medication.

Our approach to Red Light Therapy for Costochondritis

We have a variety of protocols for treating costochondritis using a mixture of Class 3b and Class 4 Therapeutic Laser equipment.

  • A thermal image scan allows us to see the area of the ribcage most affected with inflammation.
  • We are able to detect areas of congestion in the lungs, caused by the constriction of breath.
  • We use Red Light Photobiomodulation Laser probes and diodes to reduce inflammation and soften scar tissue or adhesions.
  • The diodes emit a slight heat, however the treatment is pleasant and leaves the patient feeling relaxed.
  • We check for inflammation again via a thermal imaging scan.
  • We use additional protocols to apply Low Level Laser at key points throughout the Central Nervous System. This holistic approach creates further freeing of the rib-cage cartilage and addresses the root cause of the costochondritis condition.
  • We also address pain associated with costochondritis. Patients normally experience relief after treatment, and report a long term recovery from the condition thereafter.

Courses of Laser Therapy treatments for Costochondritis

Each case is assessed on an individual basis.

As guide we assess and give a treatment in the first session, then advise on a course of sessions, usually beginning with 3 sessions in total after which we assess progress of the condition.

Clinical Studies

RCT evidence for costochondritis is lacking. One report in Tietze’s shows benefit; and there’s supportive chest-wall evidence (sternotomy/post-surgery) for PBM reducing pain and aiding tissue healing. Evidence for PBM in costochondritis is emerging; most high-quality trials so far are in related chest-wall conditions. We offer PBM as adjunctive support alongside medical care.
