Low Level Laser Therapy for Pain Relief is a non-invasive, effective treatment for pain relief and pain management. Many clinical studies prove the efficacy of Laser Therapy (LLLT) for treating pain, and explain the biological process of Photobiomodulation, triggered by the application of specific light wavelengths at optimal powers outputs. Low Level Laser Therapy (also known as Photobiomodulation Therapy and Red Light Therapy) is a stand alone therapy, and can be used in combination with other rehabilitative complementary therapies. Red Light Therapy for Pain is a non-invasive procedure with no adverse effects, and it reduces the need for analgesic medication. in many cases Low Level Laser heals the source of inflammation or pain.

How does Low Level Laser Therapy for Pain relief work?

Therapeutic Laser works at three fundamental levels to address pain. The lymphatic system is balanced to encourage the distribution of white blood cells to the necessary areas of the body for healing. As part of this process, endorphins (the body’s natural pain reliever) and enkephalins (related to endorphins) are released into the blood stream, which has an analgesic effect. Laser Therapy (LLLT) also decreases nerve sensitivity by decreasing bradykinin, a pain eliciting chemical. LLLT has a pain-blocking effect on certain nerve fibres, which are also play a major role in natural pain relief. Furthermore, Low Level Laser reduces inflammation, which is often the source of pain and discomfort for many of our patients.

With an increasing number of Red Light Therapy devices available, we offer a brief explanation of the different types of Lasers and LED devices below:

Class 1 Laser | LED Red Light

Class 1 devices cannot harm the eyes, which is why they are freely available for home use. Power output for Red Light Therapy for Pain | LED equipment can increase up 200 mW and still fall within a low power laser category. We recommend a number of Class 1 home use laser devices for our patients to use in between treatments in the clinic. Please visit Our Shop.

Class 2 Laser | LED Red Light

Red Light Therapy | LED products on the market may have increased the power output. Class 2 lasers are limited to a maximum output power of 1 milliwatt or one-thousandth of a watt (abbreviated to mW). The Hue Light Whole Body PBM Chamber is a good example.

Class 3b Laser

Class 3b Laser is widely used within most clinical Low Level Laser settings. Embraced by the medical profession Photobiomodulation Therapy NICE Guidelines cover the use of Class 3b for pain and tissue repair in the UK. Class 3b Laser does not create a thermal effect so it does not burn, however Class 3b laser could damage the eyes if shone directly into them. Protective goggles are always worn and the treatment is administered by a professionally trained therapist. Class 3b Laser is considered an incredibly effective Red Light Therapy for photobiomodulation. At Laser Medicine we use a variety of probes with different wavelengths and power output depending on the medical condition and treatment. Read more information on Class 3b Laser.

Class 4 Therapeutic Laser

Laser devices with an output power of above 500 mW can burn. When using Class 4 Therapeutic Lasers the optic does not directly touch the skin. Class 4 Laser is a wide category, covering therapeutic laser at the lowest power to surgical lasers which cut and ablate the skin, to even higher power lasers used in the military, for example. We use a mixture of Class 3b and Class 4 therapeutic laser for healing and recovery, and for treating pain.

Our approach to Laser Therapy for Pain Relief

We successfully employ Low Level Laser Therapy to reduce pain and inflammation for many health conditions. Often, patients who have been in pain for many years experience instant relief after a Therapeutic Laser treatment, which can significantly improve their health and quality of life. Moreover, we find the results are long lasting, when traditional medication has been unable to resolve pain successfully. In our experience, we believe that pain management is the most compelling use of Low Level Laser Therapy.

In the clinic we employ a selection of high grade clinical devices – we use Class 4 Therapeutic Lasers (K-Laser), Class 3b Therapeutic Lasers, with some LED Red Light too (Omega Laser and the Powermedic Gigalaser).

We also supply the best home use devices in Our Shop.

Laser Therapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions

low level laser therapy for pain relief

We offer treatments for the improvement of many inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Sports injuries relevant to ligament, tendon, muscle and soft tissue damage.
  • Acute & chronic back pain, including sciatic nerve pain.
  • Neck pain.
  • Knee pain.
  • Plantar Fasciitis (heel pain).
  • Epicondylitis (tennis elbow).
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (wrist pain).
  • Achilles Tendinitis (leg pain).
  • Adhesive Capsulitis (frozen shoulder).
  • Fracture healing.

Laser Therapy for Inflammatory Conditions

clinical grade red light, photobiomodulation therapy, low level light therapy, low level laser, health optimisation, therapeutic laser for digestive health, Red Light for Gut Microbiome

Pain is associated with many inflammatory health conditions, including endometriosis, post herpetic neuralgia and digestive tract disorders. In the case of Peripheral Neuropathy and Neuralgia, where there is nerve damage, Low Level Laser can resolve pain and heal the nerve, which may result in long term pain relief. We have developed effective protocols to help heal the following conditions:

  • Rheumatoid & Osteo-Arthritis.
  • Chronic oedema (swelling & fluid retention).
  • Headaches & migraines (including TMJ / jaw pain).
  • Peripheral Neuropathy.
  • Neuralgia (Post-Herpetic, Trigeminal).
  • Fibromyalgia.

Courses of Laser Therapy Treatments for Pain

Our protocols are designed to create the maximum benefit in the shortest possible time frame. We aim to provide some relief during and after the session. Each case is assessed on an individual basis. Depending on the condition we recommend a series of sessions at regular intervals.

As guide we assess and give a treatment in the first session, then advise on a course of sessions, usually beginning with 3 sessions in total so that we can assess progress.
