Optimising physical health for fertility and conception.

As the leading provider of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for Fertility in London, we meet a lot of women and men who want to improve their chances of conception, either through natural methods or assisted reproduction therapy (ART). Laser Therapy or Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) has proven to be one of the most effective natural health for fertility treatments available. LLLT improves egg quality in women (and sperm quality in men), particularly in the over 35 age group where egg and sperm quality is usually the over-riding challenge for conception.

We appreciate that conception, like all health issues, is best approached holistically. In the same way that overall health and fitness supports the healing of many specific conditions, attention to health, fitness and mental well-being increases the likelihood of conception. Rather than relying on Laser Therapy alone to improve reproductive health, we encourage our patients to embrace as many natural fertility methods as possible. This post on natural health for fertility, focusses on improved physical health to support conception for the over 35s, and we discuss the value of weight management, exercise, vitamins, supplements and diet.

Diet and Nutrition

Nutrition is widely explored around improving conception and many food sources contain natural supplies of the vitamins and minerals that the body needs. Leafy green vegetables, high in antioxidants and folate, may aid conception. Eating enough protein is also essential, along with healthy oils and fats to nourish the cells at a deep level.

A favourite diet plan at Laser Medicine is the MMT diet (metabolic mitochondrial therapy diet, which, like Photobiomodulation Therapy, has the most impact at a cellular level for healthy mitochondria. Like Low Level Laser Therapy, a high fat, low carbohydrate, adequate protein diet, with plenty of leafy green salads and vegetables, stimulates the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the body’s fuel or energy supply.

Eating breakfast or increasing the size of breakfast has been linked to reducing the hormonal impact of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), as it reduces testosterone levels in women with this condition. Similarly, reducing carbohydrate intake also helps with PCOS.

Weight Management

Maintaining an optimum weight for conception is important. We find that one way to do this is to introduce intermittent fasting into your regular eating habits, to keep your metabolism firing on all cylinders. The easiest method is to fast for 16 hours a day, timing this to complement your sleep and work routine, rather than fasting for 24 hours at a time (we find this very difficult when we are exercising and working). Everyone has their own individual preference as to which 8 hours in the day feel the most natural for them to consume food.

Exercise

When it comes to exercise balance is key. Exercise is good for a strong metabolism and life-force. Cells are oxygenated and we feel a sense of well-bing from a release of endorphins. There is evidence to indicate that moderate amounts of exercise increase fertility, however over exercising can deplete the body and have a negative impact overall.

Resolving Reproductive Health Conditions

Endometriosis, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Fibroids and sperm quality can all impact on the ability to conceive. Laser Therapy can help resolve these conditions, further enhancing reproductive health and preparing the body for conception.
