Introducing Matt Thomson, Neurodevelopment and Primitive Reflex MNRI Stage 4 Practitioner

To support our work in Laser Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorders, we are delighted to welcome Matt Thomson to the London team. Matt is an ex GB gymnast and RAF helicopter pilot, who retrained several years ago as a specialist in neurodevelopment and primitive reflexes while helping his son. Based on a neurodevelopment method similar to the Melillo Method, Matt trained in a psychology-led approach to child neurodevelopment and Autism / ADH – the MNRI Reflex Modulation technique, developed by Dr Svetlana Masgutova in the USA. Matt is a Stage 4 MNRI practitioner and brings a wealth of experience and skills in neurodevelopment and primitive reflexes to the Laser Medicine team.

Like the Melillo Method, the MNRI technique – Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration focuses on identifying and integrating retained primitive reflexes within the child that are causing neurological delays. Dr Masgutova’s approach to child neurodevelopment also fully acknowledges the place of psychological trauma. Matt Thomson works with each child to recognise and appreciate their own unique set of circumstances and how neurodevelopment and primitive reflexes are uniquely combined.

How neurodevelopment and primitive reflexes are connected

Every one of us is born with primitive reflexes, which have a limited purpose while an infant (at least 3 primitive reflexes help the infant turn in the womb and birth, for example), however they should all be completely integrated (or cleared) within the first year of a baby’s life. From a neurodevelopment point of view it is important that the primitive reflexes integrate, because they are active in the brain stem – the most primitive area of the brain below the cerebellum. An infant’s brain develops in the early years mostly from the bottom up – meaning that physical movement informs the brain and helps it to develop. If the primitive reflexes are retained longer than a few months they create a block in the brainstem and interfere with neurodevelopment. This in turn can lead to neural imbalances and disconnections, which manifest as delayed development and challenging behaviour.

The table below, taken from Dr Masgutova’s research shows a direct link between neurodevelopment and primitive reflexes:
