Our history
Ruth Phypers founded Laser Medicine in 2015 after experiencing the remarkable healing benefits of Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy first hand. Even though Low Level Laser Therapy (as it was referred to by the medical community in 2015) was discovered in 1967 by Endre Master in Hungary, there were few General Practice Laser Therapy clinics in Europe. The majority of photobiomodulation laser therapy practitioners worked in musculoskeletal based modalities and / or were brilliant and pioneering scientists and medical doctors carrying out research in university hospitals around the world in their specialist areas.
Ruth’s health background was teaching fitness and yoga from 1999. She was a qualified instructor, and when she became aware of Red Light and Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy (PBM) she immediately engaged in accredited Laser Therapy medical training.
Ruth’s teacher was a senior registered acupuncturist who developed Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy (PBM) protocols over 30 years of practice. As he developed Low Level Laser Therapy protocols, he used acupuncture needles less and less. As an acupuncturist, his protocols were based on a holistic approach to health. Photobiomodulation using Red Light triggers biological mechanisms within tissue, which encourage homeostasis and optimise the metabolism of energy for healing and longevity throughout the body.
Many different health conditions benefit from improved mitochondrial energy and increased angiogenesis. Ruth studied many health conditions during a two year diploma in Therapeutic Laser. She expanded anatomy and physiology knowledge from fitness and yoga, and combined this with a deep understanding of the biological process of Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy and the way in which Class 3b and Class 4 therapeutic laser technology works.
Ruth launched the Laser Medicine practice in 2015. Since then she has provided Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy healing throughout the UK and to many other people who travel from Europe and further afield. Some of Ruth’s continued professional development has been groundbreaking in the medical field.
Research into the Efficacy of Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy to restore thyroid function with Clinical Endocrinologist Prof. Venera Berisha- Muharremi and Dental and Maxillofacial Surgeon Prof. Reem Hanna was recently published in the Journal of Personalised Medicine (August 2023).
Ruth’s passion for Red Light Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy for Fertility and Reproductive Health is ongoing. She works closely with leading gynaecologists in the IVF field, and has developed protocols for Ovarian Rejuvenation using Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy in collaboration with them. In August 2024 Ruth was invited to contribute to the prestigious WALT (World Association of Photobiomodulation) PBM2024 Conference in London. She continues to train and support medics and therapeutic practitioners in laser therapy around the world and offers a partner programme for those interested in working together.
Ruth is a full member of the British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) since 2018.

The British Medical Laser Association (BMLA).
The British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) is the foremost society for medical lasers in the UK, representing dermatologists, plastic surgeons, nurses, technologists, scientists, beauty therapists, manufacturers and safety advisers. The Photobiomodulation Laser Therapy stream promotes best practice and current research in the field. The BMLA represents anyone with an interest in the application of lasers or energy-based devices in medicine and aesthetics. Among its core activities, the BMLA informs national policy, ensures continual improvement of safety and educational standards in the field of medical and aesthetic lasers, and promotes collaboration between clinical, aesthetic, scientific and manufacturing disciplines.
The Complementary Medical Association (CMA).
The Complementary Medical Association’s (The CMA) primary aim is to promote ethical, responsible, professional complementary medicine to the public and the medical profession. The CMA realises that complementary and integrative medicine is – when delivered safely and ethically – a viable and highly desirable form of healthcare. In addition, The CMA is totally dedicated to representing “the professional face of complementary medicine” and promotes research, education and knowledge in the field. The CMA is for professional practitioners, ethical colleges and patients who demand and expect excellence in every aspect of treatment.
