We are delighted to acknowledge Ruth Phypers at Laser Medicine’s contribution to the important work carried out by Professor Venera Berisha-Muharremi MD, endocrinology specialist at Pristina University Hospital, relating to our Clinical Study in the Efficacy of Photobiomodulation Therapy for Hashimoto Thyroiditis (2023).
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT) is a thyroid specific autoimmune disorder, triggering hypothyroidism in a population with adequate dietary intake. Despite the current conventional treatment which focuses on the permanent replacement of levothyroxine (LT4), it appears that thyroid autoimmunity remains the cause of persistent symptoms in patients with HT, even when they retain appropriate thyroxine levels from medication. This study shows that the application of Low Level Laser Therapy / Photobiomodulation Therapy for Hashimoto Thyroiditis may contribute to the restoration of thyroid gland homeostasis in patients with HT compared with supplements alone.
Summary of Clinical Study: Photobiomodulation Therapy for Hashimoto Thyroiditis (2023).
74 female subjects aged between 20 and 50 years old were divided into 2 equal groups. Group 1 received both Photobiomodulation Therapy and supplements, Group 2 received supplements alone. Subjects in Group 1 received a dose of Class 3b Low Level Laser at the wavelength of 820nm with a power output of 200mW , 20 seconds per point, fluency 32 J/cm2 twice a week for 3 consecutive weeks. Groups 1 and 2 received a dose of Vitamin D and oral selenium according to their personal serum levels. Biochemical measurements of FT3, FT4, antiTPO and antiTG were also evaluated before and after the course of PBM treatments.
The findings showed significant improvement in Group 1 parameters (PBM + supplements) compared with Group 2 (supplements only) in terms of weight loss and reduction in the following parameters: BMI, hip and waist circumference, waist / hip ration. TSH, antiTPO, antiTG and treatment dose of LT4. Our results showed for the first time, demonstrated an efficacy of PBM delivered at a lower fluency with supplements in restoring thyroid function, anthropometric parameters and lifestyle factors in patients with Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Hence extensive studies with a longer follow-up period are warranted.
